ABOUT THE ARTIST

Based in Eugene since 1974, Jerry Ross serves as a defining voice in Oregon’s art community. His career bridges painting, teaching, writing and activism-linking the classical soul of Italy with the rebellious heart of the Pacific Northwest. He is a builder of ideas as much as an artist, driven by the belief that a canvas should engage the world socially, politically and intellectually.

BEYOND THE CANVAS

As a polymath with a background in math and computer science, Ross approaches creativity as a living structure. He has spent five decades fostering a culture of defiance: from co-founding the New Zone Art Collective to provide a home for experimental work, to establishing the Salon des Refusés as a bold alternative to traditional art gatekeeping. To Ross, art is not merely an object, but a philosophy of truth.

AMERICAN VERISMO: A DISTINCT VISION

At the heart of this exhibition is Ross’s self-defined style: American Verismo. Rooted in the Italian concept of vero (truth), his work utilizes a non finito aesthetic to preserve the raw energy of the first mark through:

—Expressive, gestural brushwork
—Structural abstraction within realism
