About New Zone Gallery
About the New Zone Gallery Collective, 1983 - 2023
The New Zone Gallery is a nonprofit cooperative gallery located in Eugene, Oregon. It features the work of over 65 members of the New Zone Artists Collective. The gallery was established in 1983 to further, develop, and foster interest in experimental visual arts and to encourage artists with like interests. The gallery has occupied several locations in its history but is currently found at 110 East 11th Ave downtown Eugene @ Oak St. In April of 2021, we moved from our previous W 7th Av location. The gallery has earned a solid reputation for presenting experimental work of high quality by local artists. Typical seasons have featured shows by individual members and also group shows that have broad public interest and encompass divergent points of view. To encourage experimentation and creativity, New Zone exhibits are non-juried, giving members an opportunity to show work that they desire to produce and exhibit, free from the limiting commercial considerations of traditional galleries. Funding for New Zone comes from a variety of sources including dues, commission on sales, donations and grants. Additionally, New Zone Gallery is the recipient of annual grants provided by both The City of Eugene and the Lane Regional Arts Council. The New Zone Gallery is a small, stable but vigorous organization that continues to have a big impact on Eugene's art scene. Gallery membership is open to the public. At this time membership is on an attrition basis. We evaluate outside artist's work exhibited in our twice a year, Zone 4 All non-juried shows, in Spring and Fall, and contact the artists we find promising and offer application for membership. |

From a 2019 search for a new space: A Special Message from New Zone Gallery President Dianne Story Cunningham - Regarding the Unexpected Vacate Notice Effective February 4, 2019:
NEW ZONE GALLERY AND ARTS COLLECTIVE: OUR STORY TODAY
New Zone Gallery has been a visual arts mainstay in downtown Eugene for well over thirty years. We pride ourselves on accessibility for both members of the viewing public and our artists. Our roster of 65 artists includes veterans and artists with disabilities, ranging in age from 21 to 85 years old. More than half our members qualify as low income. Most artists who apply for membership, and prepare and show their work in a professional manner, are accepted for membership. Our First Friday celebrations provide food and beverages to any art lover who walks through our door. We schedule musicians who benefit from public exposure and compensate for their entertainment, throwing the best gallery party in town on the First Friday of every month.
Many artists labor in obscurity and have limited opportunities to show their work. New Zone seeks contact with those artists so they can experience a professional gallery presentation and First Friday celebration of their work. With support, many of those artists will improve their artistic skills, and better understand how to present and market their work. Some of Eugene’s best loved and noted artists have started out with this gallery. New Zone artists provide skilled artistic works to the Eugene art market at affordable prices, allowing many buyers to have original artworks in their homes. Since this work is created by community member artists, that money stays here in Eugene.
We have been supported, during our many years in downtown Eugene, by various businesses who provide beverages and food for our openings. Other than a few small grants, we have been able to keep the doors open with the amazing volunteer efforts of our members, who all participate in running the gallery as a requirement of membership. Inexpensive dues and a low commission on art sales have allowed New Zone to serve our talented but often struggling artists while flourishing in the community.
During the past twelve years we have been fortunate to rent gallery space at under- market rates we could afford. For ten years Oregon Contemporary Theater (OCT) provided an excellent space at very affordable rent, and for the last two years the Hood family has rented us our current space at a price we could afford. We are forever grateful for the generosity and support OCT and the Hood family have provided.
Unfortunately for New Zone, the improving real estate market in downtown Eugene has resulted in the loss of our current space and we are once again looking for a new place to call home. Ideas or suggestions you may have that would help us find that new space would be very much appreciated. We are grateful for any assistance you can provide as we negotiate this change.
