About the Artist |
"My first professional art training began in New York City, where I attended the High School of Music Art. I attended many music assemblies, which was part of our education at Music and Art, and I began sketching musicians and interpreting the music into visual forms. In addition, I found that the instruments the musicians used were beautiful art forms in themselves and fanatically studied how to draw each one realistically. When I was fourteen I began studying and the Student’s Art League. I studied figurative drawing, composition and perspective at the Students Art League. I continued to study drawing and painting at Choinard Institute in Los Angeles. |
"My early professional training was influenced by Frank Reilly and other art instructors who guided me gently, but firmly onto my own personal pathway. Although my art education was rather formal in instruction, I felt free to explore my personal imagery as well as exploring a wide range of subjects and mediums.
"Although I paint a variety of subjects, painting musicians and the aura of their music continues to fascinate me. The color, sound and movement of the music constantly captures my imagination. As I watch the musicians create sounds my inner eye can capture the patterns and abstract forms as the music plays into my heart and mind. The instruments, each form a perfect art creation becomes integrated with the musicians heartbeat. Although the musicians create music together, each musician is surrounded by his/her aura, as the music flows in and out of each figure and into each other.
"I have sketched and painted musician paintings wherever I have traveled or resided; jazz ensembles in San Francisco, Gold Beach Honky Tonk Bars, Folk music at Eugene’s Saturday Market, Willamette Folk Festival, the WOW Hall, Black Forest Inn, B.J. Kelly’s and other music hangouts that are long gone. I painted the musicians at the Bach and Mozart Festivals and Peruvian musicians when I lived in San Migel de Allende in Mexico.
"I hope you enjoy The New Zone Gallery and hear the music in my paintings!"
