About the Artist
In my paintings, prints, and photographs, I try to convey a sense of “mindful voyaging,” taking the viewer through a window of imagination to someplace they may have never been, yet they could still find recognizable. The journey may be fascinating, edgy, or mysterious, feel pleasant, amusing, or even disturbing, but it can also be a passage of awakening.
I was born and raised in Massachusetts, where my father was a member of “The Boston Expressionists,” a movement active from the 1930s-50s that originated in the Boston School of the Museum of Fine Arts. That’s also where my parents met. My mother was a figurative sculptress who later discovered a talent for traditional “Sumi-E” scroll painting, studying under Taiwanese master Lee Chiang. After graduating Boston University’s School of Fine Arts, I participated in one-man and group shows at galleries in London’s West End, Toronto’s Royal Ontario Museum [receiving the Paolo Award], Georgetown near DC, New York’s SoHo, Sydney, and Melbourne. Much of the past three decades I spent living in Japan and visiting 60-plus countries as a photographer/journalist publishing articles and books. |
After teaching at universities in Australia, England and Japan, I relocated to Eugene in 1999, returning to fine arts, taking classes at UO & LCC, and currently writing a monthly travel column for the Register Guard.
At the 2015 Mayor's Art Show in Jacobs Gallery, I received a Juror's Choice Award for my oil painting “Harlequin Dreams." The award certificate states: “This painting is not only well painted, but it’s subject matter is fascinating. The Jurors were continually drawn to it, and found new images and plays of patterns and colors. The artist has created an allegory that appears both personal and mythic. The imagery is specific enough to create a believable and consistent narrative, yet open enough that the audience can find their own story within the image.” That pretty much sums up the artistic intent in all my work.
