"My life has been woven through the years with my enchantment of art, fibers, landscaping and the outdoors.
In 1980, while living at Belknap Hot Springs, my passion for basket weaving began. At that time our only way home was by a cable car over the river, but that's another story. After making my first splint woven egg basket I began to devour books on baskets. I was collecting local fibers, dying my own reeds, and branching out to other forms of weaving. "In 1983, coiling with pine needles was introduced to me. I was hooked and have been so ever since. Using only pine needles and raffia in the beginning, I began to add other fibers. My work has evolved from more traditional baskets to sculptural vessels, necklaces and more complex framed pieces. "As a basket instructor for more than 20 years, it is always a thrill to share the excitement that comes with this wonderful medium. "I use the ancient techniques of basket making to create what I like to call eye candy. The common thread woven through each piece is a touch of whimsy. Beauty and artistry, pure and simple." - Sheri Smith |
